SHA-256 Checksum: workflow and output
Compute a SHA-256 fingerprint of a file’s bytes. Use it to compare a downloaded file with a checksum published by a trusted source.
How to use SHA-256 Checksum
- Choose the exact file to check.
- Run the checksum calculation.
- Compare all 64 hexadecimal characters with the trusted reference, or download the TXT report.
Example and result checks
The synthetic sample’s browser result matched an independent SHA-256 calculation. Changing the filename alone does not change the hash if the bytes stay identical.
What this tool does not do
A checksum proves byte equality with a reference, not that the file is safe or that an untrusted publisher is legitimate. A changed file produces a different hash.
Troubleshooting and choosing the right workflow
Make sure the reference uses SHA-256 rather than another algorithm. Compare the unmodified downloaded file, not an extracted or re-saved version.
