How to Unlock a Password-Protected PDF (When You Know the Password)

A password-protected PDF can be inconvenient when an authorised recipient needs a readable copy for editing or extracting text. Removing encryption creates an unprotected copy, so decide who should receive that copy before processing it. FileHelper PDF Unlock works when you already know the valid password; it does not recover an unknown password.

Check the protected original first

Open the document in your usual PDF reader and confirm that the password works. Check the page count and identify the fields, images or signatures that matter. Keep this original instead of overwriting it with the result.

Unlocking with FileHelper

  1. Open PDF Unlock and choose the protected PDF.
  2. Enter the existing password in the PDF Password field. It is used by the browser decryption engine.
  3. Run the tool and allow its processing library to load. Wait for the unlocked result.
  4. Review the PDF preview, then download the file ending in -unlocked.pdf.
  5. Reopen the download in a PDF reader and check that the intended pages are readable without entering the password.

A checked example

During our tool audit, a synthetic two-page PDF was encrypted with a known test password. The browser workflow produced a readable PDF whose encryption flag was removed. That example checks the normal known-password workflow; it does not establish that every unusual or damaged PDF is supported.

If the password is rejected

Check capitalisation, keyboard layout and accidental spaces. If the same password fails in your PDF reader, contact the document owner for the correct password. Renaming the PDF or repeatedly changing tool settings will not bypass its encryption. If the original opens but this tool fails, retain it and report the error text and browser version without sending its password in a public support message.

Protect the resulting copy

The unlocked document no longer has the original password barrier. Share it only with intended recipients, and avoid storing it in a public folder. Re-saving can invalidate a digital signature; a visible signature image alone does not prove that a new copy retains the original cryptographic signature. Keep the signed protected source when verification matters.

Choose the next task deliberately

If you need editable text, PDF to Word extracts a readable text layer into DOCX, rather than rebuilding exact page design. If your aim is to make filled form fields permanent, use PDF Flatten on an appropriate saved copy. Unlocking, flattening and compression are separate operations.
